Staging the Scene

"Nothing We Can Do" from Orpheus in the Underworld

This week in Opera Workshop has been one of those times that reminds me why I love performing so much. We've been hard at work preparing for our upcoming Opera Showcase, and I'm so excited to share a little sneak peek of what's been happening behind the scenes!

One of the numbers we're performing is "Nothing We Can Do" from a modern version of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld — a lively and comedic scene that has been such a joy to bring to life. In this trio, my friends Han, Mason, and I play King Jupiter, Pluto, and Queen Juno. The chemistry between these characters is hilarious and over-the-top, and it has been a blast exploring their personalities through staging, gestures, and comedic timing.

Our rehearsals have been full of laughter, creativity, and those "aha" moments when things just click. It is amazing to me how each session brings the scene closer to feeling like a real performance—every movement, expression, and musical phrase slowly falling into place. And while working on these elements, we also can't forget clear diction, breath support, and musical interpretation.

I'll be sharing a short video clip from one of our recent rehearsals, showing part of the beginning staging process and how this quirky trio is coming together. It's been so rewarding to see our hard work start to pay off, and I can't wait for everyone to experience the final performance at the Opera Workshop Showcase on November 14, 2025 in Beckwith Hall at NDSU. Stay tuned — it's going to be a fun night filled with incredible music, storytelling, and a lot of personality!
